The Barn B & B

Welcome To The Barn Bed & Breakfast

Phil and Barbara Brown welcome you to their home and the 4* Barn Bed and Breakfast at Tyn Cellar Farm, Margam.

We are the winners of the Best B&B in Swansea Bay and Mumbles for 2010 and 2012. (Swansea Bay biannual Tourism Awards). Also we won the Local authority Building Excellence Awards 2011 in our category

Stay in our grade 2 listed barn that has been lovingly restored and converted to provide a 6 bedroom bed and breakfast. We offer a variety of accommodation to meet all needs.

Records show that the original farm house and barn date back to the 16th century and possibly earlier.

We have records showing all the tenants back as far as 1560. The original farmhouse was enlarged in 1890 when the front of the farmhouse was developed and extended along with most of the out buildings of the existing farm.

The barn that houses the bed and breakfast was increased in height at that time . The original barn was probably part of a long house and clear evidence could be seen of this as the barn was being converted.

Tyn Cellar was originally part of the Margam Abbey Estate. Literally Tyn Cellar translated means 'House of the Cellar man' and it is thought the name of the farm originates from this, and the supplies for the Abbey and Estate were stored in the barn.

We have been very careful to maintain as many of the original features and characteristics as possible, all the exterior walls have been scutched out and re-pointed using traditional lime mortar in the joints.

Where new windows have been put in as much of the original stone as possible was reused. All the interior walls were also scutched out and re-pointed and were then packed out with lime mortar and hand plastered to show the stone work off and allow it to be lime painted.
